Things to do on the French Riviera: Menton

It might not be as famous as the big-name attractions of Monaco or Cannes, but if you’re looking for something to do Menton is definitely worth a visit, not only for its old-world charm but its covered market which was recently heralded the most beautiful on the Riviera.

The market takes place every morning, situated in a striking building designed by the architect Adrien Rey, a student of Gustave Eiffel (guess what he designed) at the entrance to the Old Town. It’s the place to taste the best flavours of the coast, but the star of the show is undoubtedly the famous Menton lemon. Menton benefits from a microclimate and it enjoys temperatures above the regional average, which has given rise to its nickname ‘La perle de la France’. It also makes it the perfect place to grow citrus fruits. After ten years of lobbying, the Menton lemon has just been awarded the IGP or ‘Indication géographique protegée’, meaning the lemon has been recognized as having unique properties. With its taste which is acidic but not bitter, the almost transparent juice and containing less pulp than other varieties, it’s a favourite of Michelin-star chefs.

In February and March each year the whole town is given over to the lemon festival, but if you want sample it yourself, it only can be found towards the end of July on the stalls of local producers. While you’re there, you can enjoy the typical Mediterranean architecture, the numerous bars and cafés, and of course the beach.

So, if you’re a foodie, or you just want to spend some time in a beautiful town on the Italian border, Menton is unmissable.
