Something to look out for while you're in Nice

Nice and its surrounding areas were heavily affected by World War Two due to its coastal positioning, proximity to Italy, and with the neighbouring town of Villefranche-sur-Mer having a famously deep harbour.

Nice was used as a place of refuge by people of many origins trying to escape the Nazis. Nice was occupied by the German Nazi forces until, with the help of Resistance fighters, on the 28th August 1944 Nice rose up and was liberated.

That day 32 citizens lost their lives but they are not forgotten. All around Nice there are commemorative plaques paying homage to the people who fearlessly fought for the city and inhabitants of Nice that day. Look out for these memorials around Nice, as well as the huge one by the port and the numerous abandoned watch stations which line the coast and the countryside between Nice and Villefranche.
